A A Khatib & Alami (K&A) is undertaking a
major rehabilitation and upgrade of the
Salang Pass to improve Afghanistan’s
economy and the health and safety of
road and tunnel users.
The functioning of Afghanistan’s economy
depends to a large degree on reliable
road connections across the Hindukush
N mountain range.
The main crossing in these mountains is
the Salang Pass (86 km), which was built
in the 1960s by the former Soviet Union.
It carries most of the cross-Hindukush
traffic, typically around 9,000 vehicles a
day, with a high share of trucks. About
80% of goods and most fuel coming into
the greater Kabul area are carried from the
north across the mountains on the Salang

highway. It is a winding road with only
one lane in each direction. At its highest
