Khatib & Alami (K&A) was main consultant for transformational project which will provide irrigation for up to 100,000 ha of agricultural land
The Al Mahsama Water Reclamation Plant in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, for which Khatib & Alami was the main consultant, has been inaugurated in the presence of the country’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The project is the largest of its kind in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world.
The new facility has a capacity of 1 million m³/day, and will treat and recycle mixed-use wastewater which was previously discarded into Lake Timsah to provide irrigation for up to 100,000 acres of agricultural land east of the Suez Canal.
K&A was appointed to the project by the Engineering Authority of the Egyptian Armed Forces (Water Department) in 2017. The company’s role included the preparation of EPC tender documents, review and approval of the contractor’s design, and site supervision of construction works.
The plant has been designed to international best standards, utilizing several sustainable technologies and techniques to treat raw water and sludge efficiently such as flash mixing, lamella settlers, disc filters, and disinfection. Furthermore, due to limited space on site, the plant has a multi-storey design in order to maximize the room available.
Dr. Maher Kahil, Senior Manager for Water Treatment, K&A, said: “We always seek to make a positive impact in the communities in which we work, so we are delighted to have played such a key role in helping to deliver this water reclamation plant for Egypt. Thanks to the vision and leadership of the Egyptian government, the Al Mahsama Water Reclamation Plant will help to address water shortages east of the Suez Canal and create significant opportunities for sustainable economic development.”
