K&A’s Reality Modeling Expertise Earns Recognition from Bentley Systems

Omani Digital Twin reality model wins at Year in Infrastructure 2020 Awards

A large scale digital twin project undertaken by Khatib & Alami in Oman has been named the winner in the reality modeling category of Bentley Systems’ Year in Infrastructure Awards. The annual awards program honors the extraordinary work of Bentley users to advance the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure throughout the world.

K&A’s winning project involved capturing and modeling 250 square km of difficult topography in Muscat, Oman within a very tight timeframe. The client wanted a model to be able to develop responses to a variety of issues, from environmental risks (such as flooding) to security and emergency response.

The biggest challenge would be the scale of the area which needed to be captured via drones, as well as the difficult topography because Oman is very mountainous. Capturing this amount of drone footage required a large number of different authority approvals, which added to the logistics. The amount of information that needed to be processed was huge, including the vectorization of 43,000 buildings.

K&A’s solution utilized some of the world’s most advanced digital modeling technologies: Bentley-ContextCapture and Esri’s ArcGIS. A digital twin model was created of the whole area in 3D, and analysis tools were developed within the model. A digital twin is a digital replica of a physical entity, so in this case, it captures all details about the land, topography, buildings, roads, etc.

K&A’s experts captured 330,000 drone images in 90 days (35 days ahead of schedule), resulting in outstanding quality and accuracy at reduced costs. The digital model has given K&A’s client extremely detailed, high-quality visualizations from which to plan long-term strategies and solutions for a variety of scenarios.

The 19 winners of Bentley Systems’ Year in Infrastructure Awards were chosen by 16 independent jury panelists, who considered over 400 nominations submitted by more than 330 organizations from more than 60 countries.
